Founded in 1740 as a settlement for about 40 families and originally named Nuestra Señora de Belén in honor of the Virgin Mary, "modern-day Belén grew up alongside the railroad line. It morphed from a small village with a railroad stop into a town, finally reaching its stride and anointing itself a city in the 1960s. The areas's proximity to the Rio Grande and fertile soil made it ideal for establishing roots."
With a current population of about 8,000 people in an area of about 20 square miles, Belén is still home to many farmers. Once the center of railroad operations in the state earning its nickname "The Hub City," these days that moniker is still relevant due to it's geographic convenience as a rest stop along I-25. But there is a new reason that has locals excited, and it is a huge part of the renaissance taking place on Becker Avenue.
One of seven cannabis dispensaries in the city, Smokal Smoke Local has made a name for itself with arguably the state's biggest selection of flower. Offering a new strain every day of the year, they have a diversity of choice that will make your head spin. Throw in edibles, extracts, salves, and some of the nicest budtenders around and you have the makings of a great cannabis experience just 40 miles south of the state's biggest city. Stop in and ask for the Hot Rod!
